The New Madrid earthquake of 1811 was the most
cataclysmic event that the United States has ever
experienced. This area is still very active and a huge
earthquake will strike again.
The New Madrid seismic zone is located in the middle of the
country, running basically in a line from southern Illinois
through New Madrid, Missouri and ending in east central
Arkansas. In a series of earthquakes beginning in 1811 this
siesmic zone produced earthquakes that would have
registered 7.5 and above on today's Richter scale.
Those earthquakes rang bells in Boston Massachusetts and
were felt as far away as Canada.
One of the most important things you can do is
know the history of this huge event.
Noted producer John Pasmore has created New Madrid Seismic
Zone: America's Ticking Time Bomb. In a masterly crafted 30
minute documentary John traveled the NMSZ and interviewed
many of the areas leading geologists, seismologists,
historians and others.
The program includes area experts such as Dr. Arch
Johnston, Dr. Joan Gomberg, Dr. Eugene "Buddy" Schweig,
Gary Patterson, Dr. David Stewart, and others.
It's true that those that don't remember
history are doomed to repeat it..
Order John's DVD video right now. It will arrive in less
than a week, and then you can get a solid understanding of
facts surrounding this horrific event and why...
What you don't know may kill you.
In a recent six-month period, five earthquakes ranging from
a magnitude 3.6 to 4.1 rocked the NMSZ. It is generally
expected that earthquakes of that magnitude should occur
once every two years. Are these quakes a warning about what
is in our immediate future? Are we due a possible 8.5
event?
A great tool for opening discussions with your
group or classroom.
